{"id":1276,"date":"2022-09-21T10:27:59","date_gmt":"2022-09-21T10:27:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/guidepost.aztute.com\/?p=1276"},"modified":"2022-09-21T10:27:59","modified_gmt":"2022-09-21T10:27:59","slug":"polio-virus-detected-in-mountain-high-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aztuteguidepost.azurewebsites.net\/index.php\/polio-virus-detected-in-mountain-high-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Polio Virus Detected in Mountain High School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1249\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/dt_220218_polio_virus_800x450-3-300x169.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/dt_220218_polio_virus_800x450-3-300x169.jpeg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/dt_220218_polio_virus_800x450-3-768x432.jpeg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/dt_220218_polio_virus_800x450-3.jpeg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Most people<\/strong>\u00a0who get infected with poliovirus\u00a0<strong>will not have any visible symptoms.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>About\u00a0<strong>1 out of 4 people<\/strong>\u00a0(or 25 out of 100) with poliovirus infection\u00a0<strong>will have flu-like symptoms<\/strong>\u00a0that can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sore throat<\/li>\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n<li>Tiredness<\/li>\n<li>Nausea<\/li>\n<li>Headache<\/li>\n<li>Stomach pain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These symptoms usually last 2 to 5 days, then go away on their own.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A smaller proportion of people<\/strong>\u00a0with poliovirus infection\u00a0<strong>will develop other, more serious symptoms<\/strong>\u00a0that affect the brain and spinal cord:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Meningitis<\/strong>\u00a0(infection of the covering of the spinal cord and\/or brain)occurs in about 1\u20135 out of 100 people with poliovirus infection, depending on virus type<\/li>\n<li><strong>Paralysis<\/strong>\u00a0(can\u2019t move parts of the body) or weakness in the arms, legs, or both occurs in about 1 out of 200 people to 1 in 2000 people, depending on virus type<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Paralysis is the most severe symptom associated with poliovirus because it can lead to permanent disability and death. Between 2 and 10 out of 100 people who have paralysis from poliovirus infection die, because the virus affects the muscles that help them breathe.<\/p>\n<p>Even children who seem to fully recover can develop new muscle pain, weakness, or paralysis as adults, 15 to 40 years later. This is called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/polio\/what-is-polio\/pps.html\">post-polio syndrome<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Note that \u201cpoliomyelitis\u201d (or \u201cpolio\u201d for short) is defined as the paralytic disease.
