It\u2019s a chronic (ongoing) condition, meaning it doesn\u2019t go away and needs ongoing medical management.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px \" data-identity=\"paragraph-element\">Asthma affects more than 25 million people in the U.S. currently. This total includes more than 5 million children. Asthma can be life-threatening if you don\u2019t get treatment.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"text-gray-900 font-bold leading-rem30px text-rem25px bp600:text-rem32px bp600:leading-rem38px mt-rem32px mb-rem16px break-words \" data-identity=\"headline\">What is an asthma attack?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px \" data-identity=\"paragraph-element\">When you breathe normally, muscles around your airways are relaxed, letting air move easily and quietly. During an asthma attack, three things can happen:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"my-rem16px mx-0 pl-[1.25rem] list-disc marker:text-brandBlue-500 marker:pl-rem24px \" data-identity=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Bronchospasm:\u00a0<\/strong>The muscles around the airways constrict (tighten). When they tighten, it makes your airways narrow. Air cannot flow freely through constricted airways.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Inflammation:\u00a0<\/strong>The lining of your airways becomes swollen. Swollen airways don\u2019t let as much air in or out of your lungs.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Mucus production:<\/strong>\u00a0During the attack, your body creates more mucus. This thick mucus clogs airways.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px \" data-identity=\"paragraph-element\">When your airways get tighter, you make a sound called wheezing when you breathe, a noise your airways make when you breathe out. You might also hear an asthma attack called an exacerbation or a flare-up. It\u2019s the term for when your asthma isn\u2019t controlled.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"text-gray-900 font-bold leading-rem30px text-rem25px bp600:text-rem32px bp600:leading-rem38px mt-rem32px mb-rem16px break-words \" data-identity=\"headline\">What types of asthma are there?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px \" data-identity=\"paragraph-element\">Asthma is broken down into types based on the cause and the severity of symptoms. Healthcare providers identify asthma as:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"my-rem16px mx-0 pl-[1.25rem] list-disc marker:text-brandBlue-500 marker:pl-rem24px \" data-identity=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Intermittent:<\/strong>\u00a0This type of asthma comes and goes so you can feel normal in between asthma flares.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Persistent:<\/strong>\u00a0Persistent asthma means you have symptoms much of the time. Symptoms can be mild, moderate or severe. Healthcare providers base asthma severity on how often you have symptoms. They also consider how well you can do things during an attack.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px \" data-identity=\"paragraph-element\">Asthma has multiple causes:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"my-rem16px mx-0 pl-[1.25rem] list-disc marker:text-brandBlue-500 marker:pl-rem24px \" data-identity=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Allergic:\u00a0<\/strong>Some people\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"text-brandBlue-500 underline underline-offset-[5px] decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/8610-allergy-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-identity=\"link\">allergies<\/a>\u00a0can cause an asthma attack. Allergens include things like molds, pollens and pet dander.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Non-allergic:\u00a0<\/strong>Outside factors can cause asthma to flare up. Exercise, stress, illness and weather may cause a flare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px \" data-identity=\"paragraph-element\">Asthma can also be:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"my-rem16px mx-0 pl-[1.25rem] list-disc marker:text-brandBlue-500 marker:pl-rem24px \" data-identity=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Adult-onset:<\/strong>\u00a0This type of asthma starts after the age of 18.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Pediatric:<\/strong>\u00a0Also called\u00a0<a class=\"text-brandBlue-500 underline underline-offset-[5px] decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/6776-asthma-in-children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-identity=\"link\">childhood asthma<\/a>, this type of asthma often begins before the age of 5, and can occur in infants and toddlers. Children may outgrow asthma. You should make sure that you discuss it with your provider before you decide whether your child needs to have an inhaler available in case they have an asthma attack. Your child\u2019s healthcare provider can help you understand the risks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px \" data-identity=\"paragraph-element\">In addition, there are these types of asthma:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"my-rem16px mx-0 pl-[1.25rem] list-disc marker:text-brandBlue-500 marker:pl-rem24px \" data-identity=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Exercise-induced asthma:\u00a0<\/strong>This type is triggered by exercise and is also called exercise-induced bronchospasm.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Occupational asthma<\/strong>: This type of asthma happens primarily to people who work around irritating substances.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Asthma-COPD overlap syndrome (ACOS):\u00a0<\/strong>This type happens when you have both asthma and\u00a0<a class=\"text-brandBlue-500 underline underline-offset-[5px] decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/8709-chronic-obstructive-pulmonary-disease-copd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-identity=\"link\">chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD<\/a>). Healthcare providers call these substances \u201ctriggers.\u201d Knowing what triggers your asthma makes it easier to avoid asthma attacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px \" data-identity=\"paragraph-element\">For some people, a trigger can bring on an attack right away. For other people, or at other times, an attack may start hours or days later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px \" data-identity=\"paragraph-element\">Triggers can be different for each person. But some common triggers include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"my-rem16px mx-0 pl-[1.25rem] list-disc marker:text-brandBlue-500 marker:pl-rem24px \" data-identity=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Air pollution:\u00a0<\/strong>Many things outside can cause an asthma attack. Air pollution includes factory emissions, car exhaust, wildfire smoke and more.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Dust mites:\u00a0<\/strong>You can\u2019t see these bugs, but they are in our homes. If you have a\u00a0<a class=\"text-brandBlue-500 underline underline-offset-[5px] decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/17712-dust-mite-allergy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-identity=\"link\">dust mite allergy<\/a>, this can cause an asthma attack.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Exercise:<\/strong>\u00a0For some people, exercising can cause an attack.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Mold:\u00a0<\/strong>Damp places can spawn mold, which can cause problems if you have asthma. You don\u2019t even have to be allergic to mold to have an attack.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Pests:\u00a0<\/strong>Cockroaches, mice and other household pests can cause asthma attacks.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Pets:\u00a0<\/strong>Your pets can cause asthma attacks. If you\u2019re allergic to pet dander (dried skin flakes), breathing in the dander can irritate your airways.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Tobacco smoke:\u00a0<\/strong>If you or someone in your home smokes, you have a higher risk of developing asthma. You should never smoke in enclosed places like the car or home, and the best solution is to\u00a0<a class=\"text-brandBlue-500 underline underline-offset-[5px] decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/8699-quitting-smoking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-identity=\"link\">quit smoking<\/a>. Your provider can help.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Strong chemicals or smells.\u00a0<\/strong>These things can trigger attacks in some people.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Certain occupational exposures.\u00a0<\/strong>You can be exposed to many things at your job, including cleaning products, dust from flour or wood, or other chemicals. These can all be triggers if you have asthma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"text-gray-900 font-bold leading-rem30px text-rem25px bp600:text-rem32px bp600:leading-rem38px mt-rem32px mb-rem16px break-words \" data-identity=\"headline\">What are the signs and symptoms of asthma?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px \" data-identity=\"paragraph-element\">People with asthma usually have obvious symptoms. The relaxed muscles let the airways move air. They also let mucus move more easily through the airways. These medicines relieve your symptoms when they happen and are used for intermittent and chronic asthma.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mb-rem12px pl-rem12px text-gray-800 text-rem19px leading-rem34px\"><strong>Anti-inflammatory medicines:\u00a0<\/strong>These medicines reduce swelling and mucus production in your airways. They make it easier for air to enter and exit your lungs.
