Donation may be of whole blood, or of specific components directly (<a title=\"Apheresis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apheresis\">apheresis<\/a>).\u00a0<a title=\"Blood bank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blood_bank\">Blood banks<\/a>\u00a0often participate in the collection process as well as the procedures that follow it.<\/p>\n<p>The amount of blood drawn and the methods vary. The collection can be done manually or with automated equipment that takes only specific components of the blood. Most of the components of blood used for transfusions have a short\u00a0<a title=\"Shelf life\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shelf_life\">shelf life<\/a>, and maintaining a constant supply is a persistent problem. This has led to some increased interest in\u00a0<a title=\"Autotransfusion\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autotransfusion\">autotransfusion<\/a>, whereby a patient&#8217;s blood is salvaged during surgery for continuous reinfusion\u2014or alternatively, is &#8220;self-donated&#8221;\u00a0<i>prior<\/i>\u00a0to when it will be needed.
